Xbox live Video Marketplace 300 for 100 points – ripoff

December 28, 2007 · 6 Comments

Well the day finally arrived where I thought I would take up Microsoft on their wonderful promotion of downloading 300 for 100 XBL points as promoted below

The only problem being, it is 100 points for the standard definition video and it is a massive 540 points for HD, humm let me think about that, no I won’t bother. Nowhere in the email do they mention it is only the SD version, plus it does not even say the usual “from” in the copy or in the small print. Overall what a giant con by microsoft, will I bother downloading stuff in the future, not a chance, they can stick it. How much money would they really lose if people downloaded this? Overall 0 out of 10 for Microsoft, poor show.

Infact it did suggest that it was for HD. In the Inside Xbox message from AceyBongos it stated that “you’ll be able to rent the stunning action movie 300 for only 100 MS Points (usually 540 MS Points)! What’s more, you’ll be able to watch King Leonidas lead his Spartan troops in glorious high definintion!”

The SD version is only 360 MS Points at full price. So from that it seems to suggest that the HD version was meant to be 100 points.

    Infact it also mentions the HD version for 100 points here;

Just thought I’d pop back for an update. So I actually did get the HD version of 300 on the 28th and was charged the full 540 points. Microsoft have since taken responsibilty for the the screw up yet they haven’t been so quick to refund the points.

I do not understand how in this day and age something so simple can be made so complicated with further irritation added by being connecting to outsourced call centers with a bad phone connection and issues of understanding dialect.

Most companies can refund things like this on the fly over the phone. I get told I’ll get a call back in 48 hours. 48 hours later, not a sausage. So I call back. Get put on hold for over half an hour, so I rang back and was told, again, I’d get a call back in 48 hours. Another 48 hours and still no call. So I ring back yet again. Talking to some dude who sounded like he was on a mobile in the congo, he tells me to rest assured because I’m not the only person this has happened to and they’re dealing with it and to wait 48 hours for a call. I didn’t feel very assured, nor did I recieve the call.

I sent an email to Live support… no reply.

I’m writing whilst on hold again, where I have been for about 20 minutes now.

Microsoft really seemed to have dropped the ball here and considering this promotion was supposed to welcome people to their Live movie service, they’ve fluffed it surely.

Some good ranting Scott, it really is a poor show, MS are also suppose to be compensating people for the poor service on Xbox live over the Christmas period. Have a read here

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks Amorangutan. Yeah the live service has been really poor hasn’t it? I’m still noticing drops now and again. Well I know what game I think I might like, but I don’t know if they’ll let us choose. I imagine that it will be easier for them to just change the price on something to free and let it be downloaded that way. They should just give everyone the cost of a game in points. Of course you’ll have to wait 48 to 72 for the call. :)

Well with regards to the refunding of points, as of 13.15 today, about a week and a half since I first a rang, I still have yet to recieve either the phone call or the points back. I’m about to put in another call, and I’m not looking forward to it.

    I’ll keep ya posted.

Now this is how it should have been done in the first place. See the time between this post and my last. I’ve called and it’s sorted. The lady on the phone said “Let me just talk to a supervisor”, about a minute later it was done.

So I’m not really all that sure why the faffing about up until now. I did notice that they’ve actually refunded the full amount not just the overcharged amount. So I got the film for free. I guess I should find some time to watch it now before it expires.

Oh well, I only feel like I’ve lost a few hours of my life. I just hope to hell I don’t ever need to use the support service again.
